What Is Leadership Friction?
Why do some practices grow while others slowly become harder to lead—even with talented people? … Leadership Friction.
Leadership Friction is the hidden cost created when communication breaks down, alignment weakens, and influence fails. It rarely announces itself. It builds quietly through delayed conversations, unclear expectations, unresolved disagreements, and inconsistent leadership. By the time most organizations recognize it, the cost is already significant.
Leadership Friction often looks like…
High performers leaving and culture drifting.
Employees becoming disengaged.
Partner disagreements that never get resolved.
Leadership teams avoiding difficult conversations.
Decisions taking longer than they should.
Growing tension without obvious conflict.
Declining accountability.
We help dental practice owners and leaders identify and eliminate Leadership Friction before it impacts performance, culture, and profitability.
Wondering if Leadership Friction is Affecting Your Practice?
Not every practice experiencing Leadership Friction needs a diagnostic immediately.

Why Leadership Friction?
Over the course of my career, I noticed something that kept repeating itself. Organizations rarely struggle because of one catastrophic event. More often, they decline through hundreds of small moments that seem insignificant on their own. A conversation that never happens. An expectation that isn't clarified. A disagreement that gets postponed. A leader who assumes instead of asking. An accountability issue that is tolerated one more time. A decision delayed because no one wants to address the real issue.
Individually, these moments don't appear significant. Collectively, they create resistance. They slow decisions. They weaken trust. They reduce accountability. They frustrate teams. They erode culture.
I came to think of this resistance as Leadership Friction.
Like mechanical friction, leadership friction isn't always obvious. It develops quietly, consumes energy, slows progress, and eventually begins affecting every part of an organization. By the time most leaders recognize the problem, they're no longer dealing with a communication issue. They're dealing with declining performance, strained relationships, partner conflict, employee turnover, or a culture that no longer reflects the organization they intended to build.
Leadership Friction isn't the conflict. It's what exists long before the conflict. That observation became the foundation of Summit Crown Advisory.
Today, we help dental practice owners and leaders identify, measure, and reduce Leadership Friction before it becomes expensive. Through assessment, facilitation, coaching, and strategic advisory work, we help leadership teams have the conversations they need to strengthen alignment, improve accountability, and build healthier organizations. Because better organizations aren't built by avoiding difficult conversations.
They're built by having them—early, honestly, and well.
Meet Mark Raffan
Mark Raffan is the Founder of Summit Crown Advisory and has spent more than two decades helping leaders navigate complex negotiations, difficult conversations, and high-stakes business relationships. He is also a best-selling author, serial entrepreneur, and the founder of Negotiations Ninja, where he works with Fortune 500 corporations to get better deals through negotiation training.
His work has included advising executives, facilitating challenging discussions, resolving partnership disputes, coaching leadership teams, and helping organizations communicate more effectively under pressure.
Across industries and organizations, one pattern remained remarkably consistent: the greatest threats to performance rarely arrived without warning. They accumulated through unresolved conversations, unclear expectations, and leadership behaviours that quietly created friction over time.
That realization led Mark to develop the Leadership Friction framework—a practical approach to helping leaders identify and address the small issues that quietly compound into significant organizational challenges.
Today, Mark works with healthcare leaders, business owners, and executive teams to reduce Leadership Friction before it affects culture, performance, profitability, and trust.
